Tensar unveils 'next

Ground stabilisation and soil reinforcement manufacturer Tensar International has revealed what is inside its "black box" - a new, next-generation geogrid, design methodology and design software.

At a recent launch event, Tensar revealed that its "black box" includes three key elements: a new design methodology, Tensar+ design software and the Tensar InterAx geogrid. The company said the innovations were in response to customers asking for more transparency within the product range.

According to Tensar, the new geogrid forms the most advanced geosynthetic stabilisation solution on the market. It added that the latest release was the culmination of work across 12 global teams and 10,000 hours of research and development into the new geogrid, which is designed to offer better value and cost savings for users.

The new grid features optimised geometry, which results in improved confinement of granular fill and creates a more efficient stabilised layer. It is therefore suitable for a wider range and quality of aggregate types and gradations than other options, Tensar said.

Benefits also include improved traffic capacity of unpaved roads, reduced road thickness, reduced construction costs and a reduced carbon footprint.

Tensar’s InterAx geogrid has been trialled on several projects over recent months. It was used to construct a temporary haul road across arable farmland with low strength subgrade in Blockley. Here, Tensar said the product delivered a 32% reduction in construction cost, 1.2 days reduction in construction time and 47% (9,920kgCO2e) reduction in environmental cost.

Speaking about the launch of the next generation geogrid, Tensar regional director for UK and Ireland Richard Abell said: “After years of hard work from the team, it was extremely exciting to finally unveil Tensar’s Black Box, which features Tensar InterAx geogrids, Tensar design methodology and the Tensar+ design software.”

In April, Tensar was purchased by Commercial Metals Company from its previous owner, private equity firm Castle Harlan, for US$550M (£440M).

US-headquartered Tensar sells its geogrid and foundation system product lines across 80 national markets. Its polymer-based geogrids are used for ground stabilisation, soil reinforcement and asphalt optimisation in construction applications, including roadways, public infrastructure and industrial facilities.
